How to Have Twins: Reader Submissions - - No Clear Reason

Reader Submissions: No Clear Reason

By Pamela Prindle Fierro, About.com

"I often wondered why I had twins 34 years ago. I certainly wasn't prepared for them as this was long before the common use of ultrasound, though I was often told by well wishers that I was probably going to have twins or more because I got so big so early. When mentioning it to my doctors, they said "No honey, we only hear one heart beat." No one in my family had twins and my mom and dad said as far back as they could remember no one in their families had twins. I was 20 years old, not the average age of mothers of twins. I was slim at 115 lbs and not too tall at 5'6". And I'd had no previous pregnancies. So all strikes were against me. But there they were, fraternal, carried to full term and weighing 6.9and1/2 and 6.12 and 1/2. My second pregnancy 2 years later was a singleton. I decided to quit while I was ahead. Had I decided to follow in my mothers footsteps (8 singletons in 14 years) who knows if I'd have had more twins or not." -- Sashi
