Indoor Fun with Twins/Multiples : Museum d'Art

Part 4: Art Projects and Crafts

By Pamela Prindle Fierro, About.com

Kids love to create. For twins and multiples, creating artwork is a chance for them to express their individuality, explore their own ideas and showcase their unique abilities. Turn a snow day into an art show with these ideas for art projects and activities. Break out the art supplies -- use whatever you have on hand, from junk mail to old magazines to brown paper bags. Your multiples will find a way to make something creative out of it.

Snow Day Art Box

If you don't have one already, today's the day to make one. Take an old box and designate it as the "Snow Day Art Box." If your multiples are grudging sharers, perhaps you should consider designating individual boxes. Have the children decorate the box, then (after the snow melts and the roads are plowed) fill it with discount store art supplies. Reserve the use of the S.D.A.B. for those housebound days when you all need something to keep you occuppied.

Portraits

Young children love to draw pictures of people, especially family members. Encourage your children to create a portrait gallery. Assign each child to draw a family member, or have them create their own portfolio then compare the likenesses. If your multiples are identical, it might be fun to have them draw each other. Or, do full body portraits by having each child lay down on a long sheet of paper. If age appropriate, allow the children to draw each other's outline. Use a roll of butcher paper or tape together several pieces to achieve the desired length.

Art Gallery

Create a gallery to showcase the creations at the end of the day. Extend a length of heavy duty string across a wall or between two surfaces, then use clothespins to hang the pages gallery style. Accessorize the artwork: make frames out of scrap cardboard or craft foam.

Free Online Coloring Pages

Low on resources? Fire up your printer! Online sources of coloring pages are abundant. About's Guide to Family Crafts has collected these links to free winter-themed pages: Winter Coloring Pages.

Snow Painting

Out of paper? Out of ink? Snow Painting allows you to bring the wintry outdoors into the house! Be prepared for a soggy mess as the snow melts.

Junk Mail

Supposedly, neither sleet nor snow can deter the faithful postal service -- which means that you probably have a pile of junk mail hanging around despite the wintry weather. Put the junk to good use by passing it on to your kids and letting them use it for their artwork. It's a great material for young children who are just learning to use scissors. Older children can craft "real" mail by cutting out pictures and letters and fashioning them into their own postcards to send to faraway loved ones. (It's never too early to start working on Valentines -- even if it's not til *next* February!)
