Omphalopgaus. The girls were joined at the chest and abdomen. They had separate but joined hearts, livers and rib cages.
Status:
In November 2008, when the twins were one month old, doctors were hopeful that they would be able to separate the girls. The girls need time to grow bigger and stronger. It was hoped that the girls could be separated before they were nine months old for optimal physical and psychological development. They were separated in a three-hour surgery at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City in January 2009. Kylee was able to go home that September. Preslee passed away in February 2011 at the age of two.
Other Information:
The girls' parents are 21-year-old Kyle Wells and 20-year-old Stevie Stewart. Stevie Stewart is a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe. The girls are the first known conjoined twins of Native American descent. The parents discovered that the babies were conjoined at twenty weeks into the pregnancy.
