Twins By the Numbers

By , About.com GuideMarch 15, 2011

Follow me on:

Are twins on the rise? Although it may seem that they are everywhere, there were actually fewer twins born in 2008, the most recent year for which data is available. However, because the birth rate declined overall in the United States during that time period, the twin birth rate is actually slightly up. Out of every 1,000 babies born, about 32 are twins.

Can you guess the state with the most multiples? I'll give you a hint. It's a "New" state in the northeast. Interestingly, the state with the fewest twin births is also a "New" state, but it's not in the northeast. Find out more: Twin and Multiple Birth Rates
