Twins With Different Fathers

Paternity testing confirmed that eleven-month-old twin boys in Texas have different fathers. Their mother, Mia Washington, became suspicious of disparity in the babies' facial features and sought out the DNA testing, which revealed a 99.9% likelihood that the children were conceived by two separate fathers. The mother admitted that she had had an affair with another man, but her partner has agreed to raise both twins as his own.

While rare, the situation is not unknown and actually has an official term: heteropaternal superfecundation. It occurs when a mother hyperovulates -- releases more than one egg -- and then has intercourse with multiple partners. Because sperm can survive for several days in a woman's body, twins can even be conceived days apart.
