My 5 year old identical girls definately look at each other as sisters, not best friends although they are very very close. They have various friends, some being twins which enables them to pay one on one away from each other or all the kids (4) get to play at something together. I think it is always good to expose your children to different social experiences with other children, some twins, some not to help them to gain the social skills they need for life rather than relying on their sister for support and reassurance. I encourage joining a multiple birth club who offers weekly playgroup sessions for twins and siblings.
I have fraternal twin girls aged 5 who are in different classes in school. One of my daughters has a best friend and the other has friends but no one special and so she always plays with her twin. Daughter A’s best friend is leaving Daughter B out and there has been arguments and nasty words spoken which is all very upsetting. I have encouraged Daughter B to make her own friends and wonder if she should not go to the friends house when daughter A goes so that daughter A can have time with her friend alone. (they have always both gone together).
