Question: Can Triplets and Other Higher Order Multiples Contract TTTS?
Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Sydrome is a disorder that impacts about ten percent of monozygotic (identical) twin pregnancies. Find more answers to Frequently Asked Questions About TTTS.
Answer: Yes. Triplets, quadruplets and other higher order multiples can develop TTTS, if any two of the multiples are monozygotic (developing from a single egg) and share a placenta (indicating that they are monochorionic). Although it is rare, it is possible for a set of identical (monozygotic) twins to exist within a set of triplets or quadruplets. In such cases, only the monochorionic fetuses that share a placenta will direclty suffer the impact of TTTS, however the entire pregnancy may be in jeaopardy due to the risk of preterm labor.
