Perinatologist

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Doctor specifically qualified to diagnose and treat medical conditions that threaten the health of mother and babies during pregnancy. Within the field of obstetrics, some physicians are designated as maternal-fetal specialists; this designation indicates a physician best equipped to handle the risks and complications associated with multiple pregnancy. Because they deal with high-risk situations, they often have great experience with the particular issues of multiple birth. However, as twins become more common, not every twin pregnancy requires this level of specialized care. Woman may be referred to a perinatologist if they experience complications, such as preterm labor, preeclampsia, or Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome.
Also Known As: Maternal Fetal Specialist
Common Misspellings: perrinatologist, perinatalogist
Examples:
Alexandra was referred to a perinatologist after experiencing symptoms of preterm labor in the second trimester of her pregnancy with twins.
