Twins in the News

Tuesday January 2, 2007
There have been several interesting news stories involving twins and multiples recently. Here's a recap:
  • New celebrity parents of twins include musicians Diana Krall and Elvis Costello. Twin boys, Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James, were born on December 6, 2006. Also in December, hip-hop star Sean "Diddy" Combs became a double-duty dad when his girlfriend, Kim Porter, gave birth to twin girls. "Diddy" announced the birth in a video recorded in the delivery room. Twin mom, Julia Roberts, also announced that she is pregnant again. Her twins, Phinneaus and Hazel, were born in November 2004.

  • Twins born on New Year's Eve/New Year's Day are both the last baby born in 2006 and first baby born in 2007 at a Boston hospital.

  • A 67-year-old Spanish woman established a new record when she became the oldest mom of twins by giving birth to twin girls on December 30, 2006. The twins were the result of an IVF procedure.

  • Seventeen-month-old twins were returned to their adoptive parents after being kidnapped by their biological mother over the holidays. Allison Lee Quetts took the children from their home in North Carolina to Ottawa, Canada after a Christmas visit. She said she gave the children up for adoption after experiencing a very difficult pregnancy, but changed her mind after signing the papers.

  • Finally, a woman with two wombs made medical history when she gave birth to triplets. Her condition, called uterus didelphys, occurs when the uterus fails to fuse during development and can make it difficult for a woman to become pregnant. In her case, two eggs were fertilized and implanted, one in each uterus. However, one of the eggs split to form monozygotic (or identical) twins, and two babies developed in one of her wombs. All three girls are reportedly healthy.
