Parents Poll: Will You Let Your Twins/Multiples Have a Cell Phone?
Monday March 23, 2009
Much to their consternation, my twin daughters STILL do not have cell phones. They are soon to turn fourteen, and according to them, are the ONLY kids in the eighth grade that are phone-less. It's not that I am opposed to cell phones. In fact, they do have a phone that they share. It belongs to me, but they are allowed to use it when they need it. However, they still do not have their own phones. As middle-schoolers, they are not allowed to have a phone in their possession at any time that they are on school property. And, I remain concerned that my daughters will find it difficult to balance their cell phone use with their other activities (namely, chores and homework!) Already, the computer, television and video games compete for their attention, and I see so many of their friends texting constantly. So I've held back from letting them have phones of their own.
But the moment is imminent. Perhaps not as imminent as they expect (just in case they are reading this!), but it's coming soon. I want to be sure that they use their phones responsibly and that we set ground rules that we all can live with.

Cell phones are a good way to stay connected to our children. Can they “be bad” for children? Sure, they can. But, they can also be used as a valuable tool of communication between a parent and a child. You need ground rules on cell phones, the same as you need them for anything else that you expose your child to. I wouldn’t dream of leaving my child at home alone without a working telephone in case there was an emergency. Why would I send my child out in this world without the same protection?
