Angelina Jolie Hospitalized During Twin Pregnancy

Angelina Jolie checked into a French hospital on July 2nd for observation of her twin pregnancy. Her obstetrician, Dr. Michel Sussmann, reported in a news conference that there was no medical emergency and that she was not expected to deliver for "weeks to come". He said the hospitalization was "normal for a patient who had a cesarean (section) during her first pregnancy."

Many moms of multiples require bed rest -- at home or in the hospital -- during their pregnancy with twins or more. It may be an attempt to prolong pregnancy by deterring preterm labor, or prescribed to alleviate symptoms of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) or preeclampsia. Sometimes it is necessary to encourage blood flow to the placenta(s), enhancing the babies' growth and development during their final weeks in the womb.
