Teen Twins Working Together

Check out this interesting dilemma from the message board. Twin16mom writes:

I have twin boys - 16.5 yrs old. They share friends, sports, school, rooms at home etc. One has a job he likes and is branching out on his own and now the other twin has been offered at job in the same place. I think my second twin should find a job elsewhere...it is his brother's only place without his twin around and he needs his own space I believe. His father thinks this is fine and I should not interfere but I disagree. How do I handle this?

It's important for parents to help their multiples establish individuality. I understand your sentiment that each twin needs his own space, a place where he is known only as himself and not relative to his twin. Many twins spend so much time together; they're usually in the same grade at the same school, have many friends in common, and often have similar interests and activities.

Yet, I also agree with your husband. At 16 years old, this seems like something that the boys can decide for themselves. They should be able to communicate their feelings about the issue and come to an agreement. If the boys were younger, it would be more appropriate for you to step in.
