I was in my fifth month when I went for my routine sonogram. While I was laying on the reclining seat with a very full bladder I happen to look at the screen just as she laid the wand on my belly. I saw these 2 circles side by side and in my mind I thought wow if I didn’t know better I would think that was 2 heads. In the next breath the Technician said do twins run in your family? I nearly wet my pants. Needless to say I was shocked because we didn’t suspect it at all. My husband had to sit down. This was 19 years ago and twins weren’t as common as they are now. I didn’t take any fertility pills or anyting. Twins just happen to run in the family. We laughed for the next few hours because we didn’t know what else to do! We did find out that they were fraternal and that one was a boy. The other turned out to be a girl. We already had 2 girls one was 3 and the other was 15months. Now the twins are in college. It seems like yesterday that it all began.

A birthday I’ll never forget….I was in my 20th week and I had asked the nurse to schedule my sonogram to see the gender on my birthday. My husband, son who is 6 also were with me. As the lady who was doing my sonogram was moving the wand around she could see that it was a boy! But then she asked a strange question..Are you expecting twins? At first my husband and I looked at each other and said No! Then a couple of seconds later she says well you are! All I could say was OH MY GOD over and over again. I was in shock! Twins don’t run in either of our families how could this have happened? Well I’m almost due now and can’t wait for my boys to come into the world! I would have to say it was the best birthday I’ve ever had..I’m blessed!

I had gone through IVF and had two embryos transferred, but I knew my chances of even one implanting were pretty slim. I found out I was 4 weeks pregnant on August 13, 2005 and I was absoultely elated! I had my first scheduled U/S on September 7. I was so worried that something was going to go wrong, that all I could think about was “please, God, let it have a heartbeat!”. Well, while the U/S technician was doing the examination, I heard her say “hmmmmmm…”. I immediately took that to mean that perhaps something was not right. She then said she was going to get my husband who was waiting outside. When my husband came in, I asked her if the baby’s heart was beating. She replied “yes, there are two hearts beating” and turned the monitor so I could see. I was stunned. My husband immediately kissed me. After going through fertility treatments, this was like hitting the jackpot to us! We were so very happy! My boys, Matthew and Daniel are now 27 months old and it’s been the best of times!

We were pregnant for the second time and went in for our ultrasound at 21 weeks, on March 17, 2005. My husband, daughter (4 at the time), and I found out we were having twins - one was for sure a boy and the doctor couldn’t tell the sex of the other baby. We were shocked but I knew we could handle twins(my husband wasn’t so sure). Let me also say that we did not do any fertility treatments, IVF, drugs, etc. This was a natural conception. The pregnancy progressed and it was a tough one, but I figured carrying two babies was just that much harder than carrying one. I went in for the next ultrasound at 30 weeks (by myself) and I was very excited to know if the babies were both boys or if they were a boy and a girl. As the doctor was performing the ultrasound, he took a look at the first baby and said “this is for sure a boy”. Then he went to the second baby and said “this is for sure a girl”. As he was on his way back to get some measurements on the first baby, he said “Oh my, there’s another head.” I said “Oh my God, one of my babies has two heads?!” He said, “No, no, there’s a body there too…we’re talking triplets!” I said “No we’re not! We’re just getting used to the idea of twins!” I was just in shock for the rest of the appointment while arrangements were made to transfer my care to a different hospital that deals with high-risk pregnancies, etc. I did manage to ask what the odds are of naturally conceiving triplets, and my doctor said about 1 in 20,000! Long story short, three and a half weeks later our triplets were born (two boys and a girl). They all weighed around four pounds and got to come home two weeks after they were born. We just celebrated their second birthdays last month. What a joy and a challenge! We’re very blessed to have four perfectly healthy and beautiful children.

What a Mother’s day! It was the saturday before mother’s day and I had to go in for a sonogram because I had been experiencing some bleeding. I was 10 weeks pregnant and was afraid that I had miscarried. From the moment that I found out I was pregnant everyone thought it would be so wonderful if I had twins! My then 4 year-old had even asked for two babies! As I was laying on the exam table I asked the tech if there was still a baby. She replied that there were two!! I was so shocked that I began to laugh hysterically and cry at the same time! And ofcourse I blamed it all on my husband. Happy Mother’s Day to me nothing will ever top that day! It has been the best year-and-a-half ever! My now 6 year-old and the twins are the joys of my life.

We went in at 3 months for the heart beat and the doctor could not find one. An ultrasound was scheduled for later that day and we were expecting the worse news. We went in and our hearts raced as the technician went over my belly time and time again. What seemed forever only took a few minutes before we heard…”Congratulations! You are having twins!” We went from no babies to two babies within hours!!! They were born full term at 6 lbs 8 oz and 6 lbs 12 oz. I lost the bet to my husband. With no history of twins I thought I had a safe win… :)
