Celebrating Birthdays with Twins and Multiples

Monday April 10, 2006
There's a lot of celebrating going on in our household this week! While my twin daughters' actual calendar birthday was last Friday, the celebration has stretched out all week. After a trip to Great Wolf Lodge over the weekend, we've got two parties scheduled for this week. Yes, that's right ... two parties. For the first time, they are having separate birthday parties. Conveniently, their birthday fell right around their school's Spring Break, offering ample opportunity for party scheduling. One girl is celebrating with a big group of twelve girls at Nauticus, where they'll explore the exhibits, make a shark craft and do nautical science experiments. The other chose to invite only her three closest friends (and her sister, of course!) for a sleepover and movie makeover party at Justice, the cheaper cousin of the ultimate trendy-for-tweens store, Limited Too.

It's interesting to see how their party selections reflect their distinct personalities. Their choices balanced out very nicely, and hopefully we'll avoid any jealous confrontations as the partying progresses. It also feels a bit bittersweet for me, as it is likely -- and hopefully -- our grand finale for big bash birthday parties, at least of the goody bag and party hat variety. They'll most likely seek more mature options when they turn 12 next year.

It's been a fun run while it lasted, though. We've thrown some very creative and fun parties in the last ten years, and I have to say that I've enjoyed the planning almost as much as the partying. When you're planning a party for twins or more, you want it to be something special, something that pleases each child individually but still works for the whole family.
